Recommendations: Ubud // Bali

Ubud has to be the ultimate plant-based Mecca. It's where homemade almond milk is the norm, raw chocolate rules and cheese is vegan by default. You can eat extremely well off fully vegan menus all around the town and what is most impressive about Ubud is that the cafes and restaurants have extensive menus but *actuallv* execute each dish well. Ok, maybe we're still in a post-Bali haze, but you just don't get this kind of food in the West. If you're looking for inspiration for your next plant-based table - look no further than Ubud.

Guide Key: 100% Vegan

Let's Do Brunch: Yellow Flower Cafe

What I love about this place is that they serve authentic local food alongside things like pancakes, toasts and treats. On the menu you'll find a great Nash Campur (rice, tempeh, sambas matah, vegetable dishes), a coconut salad and so much more. If you have room, try their traditional Pinang

Goring (Indonesian banana fritters).

Cool Coffee: Schauberger Coffee

This hidden gem is just outside the main town and easy to get to on a scooter. They serve the best artisan coffees in town, from lattes to v60 they also offer iced tea and also have great cakes including a teeny tiny chocolate pot.

This place is next to a great vegetarian Warung 'Alam Green Lotus' too if you're ready for a bite after your coffee stop!

Keep It Raw: Seeds of Life

Seeds of Life is another original establishment in the centre of town known for their Taoist Tonic bar and fully raw menu. Set aside plenty of time to go here, as perusing the menu and self-prescribing your magic potions is fun to take your time over. I love their raw lasagne and gynostemma-based concoctions!

Crowd-Pleaser: Zest

Zest has just had a huge revamp, this Ubud

destination has a huge menu of everything from pizza to more hearty snacks and bowls. Zest really has something for everyone so if your non-plant-based people this one will keep everyone happy. I must also mention they have a beautiful tea room where they hold tea ceremonies which are 100% worth checking out too!

Fill Your Fridge: Bali Buda

This amazing shop has everything you could ever desire. From organic cleaning and beauty products to locally-made snacks and produce.

The perfect place to stock up on anything you may need while travelling!

Moksa is a must-visit for brunch, lunch or dinner with their Chef and Founder 'Chef Made' who has created this beautiful outdoor restaurant where you must try their delicious curries and soups.

I love to visit on a Saturday for brunch with a menu of delights from supercharged smoothies, sweet and savoury dishes - and check out the local farmers market selling fresh tropical fruits and vegetables as well as spices and crafts!

The Original: Alchemy

Alchemy was the first raw vegan restaurant to open in Ubud, a true trailblazer and the place that always becomes your regular if you're lucky enough to be in Bali for an extended period of time. Using quality ingredients, Alchemy offers a great breakfast bar, savoury waffle bar and famous salad bar (like none you've ever seen) they also offer and extensive juice, smoothie and drinks list alongside creative breakfast, lunch and dinner plates.

Of course you must leave room for cakes, I would argue they have the best vegan cakes and chocolates in Ubud. If you just can't choose try their cocobiotic fermented drink, build your own incredible salad and their get a pumpkin seed hot chocolate with a legendary 'alligator bar' to finish!

Let's Do Drinks: Clear Cafe

This is a beautiful restaurant in the centre of Ubud, worth going to just for the surroundings! What they do really well is their drinks filled with potent plants and superfoods. My favourite is the Lemon Drop - a mixture of lemon ginger and Irish moss.

Join Me For Dinner: Nusantara

The sister restaurant to @restaurantlocavore, Nusantara celebrates lost dishes, rituals and cooking techniques that make the rich culture that is Indonesia.

This is a fantastic place to experience unusual ingredients and understand Indonesian food in a deeper, more interesting way. Although they are not fully plant-based, they can certainly cater.

One To Watch: Locavore

This hyperlocal, über creative concept is well known in the word food scene and has previously been in the worlds 50 best. Not only do their innovative dishes and ingredients come from their close surrounding but their furniture and glassware too.

They have been creating a Herbivore menu for plant- based people alongside very funky drinks pairings both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. But in line with 2023 being the year of change, they too are reimagining their concept and bringing us the next generation of Locavore (opening any minute!)

Keep your eyes peeled for this one, for sure it will be worth the trip!

Sleep: Gdas

This is without question the best fully vegan hotel we have come across, still in their soft launch phase. GDAS was founded by Russel Simmons, the Godfather of Hip Hop, Yogi and Author. Their dedication to plant-based living stands out from the crowd with their Tangi restaurant serving great vegan food, down to there being vegan honey for your tea in the room! They serve a funky drinks list with their smoothies including ingredients like mung beans and sesame milk and serve a delicious breakfast where you can enjoy variety over many days as a plant-based person.

GDAS is hard to put into words, as every detail of the experience is so well-considered; from their food, to stunning rooms, and pool. They are soon to be opening their spa which will feature hot and cold therapies as well as an incredibly cool east west fusion spa menu.

I can't wait to go back!
